CLUB NEWS


At the September meeting Lynne Comings was awarded the Stretch Award for all her hard, awesome work as editor of the club program book.  

Education co-chair, Jessica Hover, presented two scholarships to Bowling Green High School seniors at the honors assembly on Tuesday, April 26th.  The Beryl Parrish scholarship was presented to Sydney Mason.  This young women has given service to the community at the Black Swamp Arts Festival and at the Youth Olympics.  She is a member of Key club, Student Activities Board and the National Honor Society.  She plans to study nursing. 

The Joan Gordon Scholarship was awarded to Julia Simon, a student who volunteers many hours each week working with children and visiting adults in a local nursing home.  She is a member of the National Honor Society and is a scholar athlete.  She plans to study early childhood education at BGSU.

The Elma Zelman Scholarship was awarded to Jenna Seeright.  She is a senior at BGSU majoring in Vocal Performance.  She studies with Christopher Scholl. 


At the May meeting Deb LeGalley was awarded the Stretch Award for the second time this year for all of her work in organizing and planning the very successful Little Black Dress FUNd-raiser. 

Debbie LeGalley was  awarded her second Stretch Award for her exceptional work on the Little Black Dress event and other social activities within the club at the May breakfast.  

At the April meeting Debbie LeGalley was awarded the Stretch Award for all of her work in organizing the Little Black Dress Scholarship FUNdraiser.  

At the March meeting Mary Mackzum was awarded the Stretch Award for all of her work in organizing, making and delivering the holiday cards to the local nursing homes.  Also for her exceptional sales ability at the Chili Cook-off Bake Sale.

At the February meeting Linda Kuhn, editor of the newsletter was awarded the Stretch Award. 

At the December meeting Sharon Biggins was awarded the Stretch Award for her contributions to the club as our Secretary

At our November meeting Joyce Osterud was awarded the Stretch Award for her work as Publicity Chairman. 

At our October meeting President Melanie Stretchbery awarded the Stretch Award to Evelyn Bachman for her many contributions to GFWC Women's Club and the community. 

At our September 2 meeting two deserving members received the Stretch Award from President Melanie Stretchbery

Deb LeGalley for organizing the Country Barbeque & Membership Round up and the Special Sisters event this summer.  Also Deb has been involved in the club t-shirt orders.

Three scholarships were awarded recently:

The first scholarship was named in the memory of Beryl Parrish, a longtime member of our club.  This year, the scholarship is awarded to a young woman who is described as "hardworking, talented and positive."  She has been on the honor roll each semester and is a member of the National Honors Society.  She has played the voila in the orchestra all four years.  She plans on studying psychology next fall at the Ohio State University.   This year's award recipient is Sara Boise.

The Joan Gordon Scholarship is a new scholarship this year made possible by a donation to the Women's Club fund from James Gordon.  Joan was a member of the Women's Club of Bowling Green for 30 years and in that time served as its treasurer, newsletter editor, program book editor, and President.  She also held several leadership positions at the district and state level including a two-year term as President of the Ohio Federation of Women's Clubs.  She was editor of the Ohio Federation newsletter, "The Buckeye".  Joan was an integral part of all the activities of the club during her membership years.    We are honored to present this award in Joan's honor to a young woman who was quoted as saying "I'm proud because to me, hard work is beautiful."  she has been on the honor roll each semester and is a member of the National Honor Society.  she has been an active athlete in cross country and swim team.  She plans on studying at Mount Union University in the fall.  This year's award recipient is Mallory Glenn.

At our May breakfast the music scholarship was presented to Hannah Stroth from Celina, Ohio.  Hannah is a freshman vocal music performance major at BGSU.   Hannah studies voice with Mrs. Myra Merritt.

Our club placed 3rd of the top 20 clubs.  We were recognized at the State Convention for this achievement plus for outstanding participation for the Arts Community Service Program, International Outreach Partner, Communications and Public Relations and GFWC Signature project Partner-PCAA.

Sharon Franklin was selected to represent Ohio at the GFWC LEADS in June.  LEADS is a leadership course put on by GFWC.  Each state gets to send one person to Memphis for training before the convention starts. 

The following members received the Ohio Blue Book of Distinguished Women (given for outstanding work) this year sponsored by our club:  Sharon Franklin, Earlene Kilpatrick, Amy Rahmel, Kathy East, Lynette Rosebrook, Jean Lanning, Linda Kuhn, Mary Mackzum and Evelyn Bachman.   Members who are already listed in the book are Beryl Parrish, Marilyn Pahl, Joan Gordon, Norma Stickler, Linda Hamilton and Camille Harris. 

The Women's Club of Bowling Green held its 33rd Annual Creative Writing Contest Awards Ceremony Thursday, April 23 at the Wood County Public Library Meeting Room.  15 first place winners were honored.  Over 200 entries were received and judged by club members.   Seventy guests were present at the ceremony. 

Fourteen new members were installed at our April meeting.   

Fifteen blankets have been made by members and donated to the Linus Project.   

400 valentines were made by members and given to nursing home residents. 

Last October the Women's Club took on the community project of planting and maintaining the "Welcome Sign" on North Main Street.  In the fall we planted many bulbs and in the spring we planted annuals in the area.  Club members volunteer their time to plant and maintain this area.  It has been very successful and the flowers are flourishing.   Drive by and check it out!!

Women's Club of Bowling Green had a Member Art Tour on June 7, 2014.  We toured Barb Klopfenstein and Mary Mackzum's homes and enjoyed their art collections.  Then we went to Evelyn Bachman's home to enjoy her art and have refreshments.  We met Nancy Leetch, a local Bowling Green artist and viewed some of her most recent works.   We played games and chatted and had a delightful afternoon.
